Sharing Our New Goal to Reduce Water Consumption

In the recent release of our 2023 Sustainability Report, nVent introduced a new goal to achieve a 25% reduction of water consumption by 2030 compared to our baseline year for Planet ESG pillar goals, 2019. We believe this is an important step in our journey as we continue to demonstrate our commitment to environmental sustainability and operational efficiency. So far, we have reduced our water consumption by 13%.

Our Planet pillar focuses on responsible energy, emissions, waste and water management to help protect our natural resources. It aligns with the UN Sustainability Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

“We want to embed environmental excellence in how we operate.” said Joel Pettit, Director of Environmental Health and Safety. “Our new goal to reduce the amount of water consumption shows nVent’s commitment to our Planet pillar and environmental stewardship.”

We chose to introduce a water goal because we understand that water availability may change due to climate change. We want to take steps to reduce our water consumption, especially in water stressed areas.

To meet this goal, we have deployed site and segment specific water improvement goals. Throughout the sustainability report in the Planet section, we have described several case studies of how we are implementing water-saving initiatives. We continually look for ways to reduce water consumption and we are committed to responsible water management.

In 2024, we plan to focus on submetering at sites with the highest water consumption rates. Submetering will provide real-time water consumption data visibility and insights to help our teams identify improvement projects with the most potential to drive progress toward our goal. For example, our site in Aberdeen, NC, installed new water submetering equipment in 2023 that has already helped us to identify opportunities to reduce water consumption.

We focus our water reduction efforts on operational efficiency projects implemented at our sites. For example, at our location in Reynosa, Mexico, we worked on a project focused on treating and reusing hard water on campus, which was completed in February 2024. This project is expected to save more than 8 million gallons of water per year going forward. These kinds of projects helped us reduce our water usage by 9% in 2023 compared to 2022.

We remain focused on environmental stewardship—achieving our Planet goals, investing in renewable energy, reducing water consumption, and reducing and diverting waste. The introduction of our new goal is an important next step in our environmental sustainability journey.
